I'm a born collector. The act of collecting, in and of itself, is a hobby and almost nothing is disposable: vintage 30s-70s housewares (in lime or olive green,) clocks, 50s porcelain egg vases, bamboo sticks and objects, yellow quartz and just about any rock that catches my eye, Asian newspapers (often used to pack international things I've ordered,) anything regarding Sephiroth and Final Fantasy VII I come across, art supplies, art books, vintage books, fake sushi, and specific collections-within-collections, such as only Starlite from Rainbow Brite. Focusing on one character can really save space.

But above all of this, I collect crabs. The likes of which you would not believe. Every material, every shape, every age group, and every color. I've recently been thinking of starting a spreadsheet just to keep track of my crabbies. They've proven to be a wonderful collection since they're not impossible to find like narwhal things, nor are they so common you trip over them, like dolphins. The vast and varied forms of crab I own include but are not limited to:
stuffed animals (from beanie babies to a giant floor pillow - at least 30+)
rubber water squirters
a generic Waterfuls ring toss game
heavy rubber dog toy that holds a Milkbone (I have no dog and use it as a remarkably effective doorstop)
cat toys
baby toys
wind-up toys
a 'family' of 5 blown glass crabs
plastic toys and models
grows-in-water toys (slimy and sponge shapes from capsules)
wooden craft store blanks
foam and plastic fishing game pieces
puffy stickers
scrapbook stickers
bumper stickers
rubber stamps
cut-out clip art from catalogs (in their own mini crab scrapbook)
storybooks
a 60s constellation map
Cancer zodiac baubles (although I'm an Aquarius)
Christmas ornaments
tin wall sculptures
a resin wine bottle holder
jewelry (four brooches, five keychains, two pendants and a pewter charm, at present)
original artwork (bought from others, I mean)
photos I find online
screenshots of cartoons and videos (see icon)
souvenirs from Maryland and San Francisco (I've never visited either)
dinnerware (even paper plates)
glassware and mugs
a matched bento box set (box lid, chopstick holder, elastic band and carrying pouch all crab-covered)
Japanese hot dog shaper
plastic cutting board
hot mitts and kitchen towels
mini baking tins
a 70s copper jello mold
a 70s ceramic planter
a planter buddy hanger-on-er
party invitations
baseball hats
teeshirts
a mini latch hook rug
a garden flag
note paper pads
pencils and pens
paper punches
decorative soap
beach towels
a handbag (hey, it had a crab- don't judge me, man)
sewing buttons
graphic buttons
buttons that pop into silicone bracelets
inflatables
fabric
a hollow 3D luau wall hanging
flat luau and kitchen signs
a wooden 3D puzzle
magnets
GaiaOnline virtual decorations (Western Zodiac, Reve Roulette)
brass crab ashtrays with hinged carapaces
steel crab with a magnifying lens
Sims 2 custom items (oddly enough, only one of them made by me)
a window suncatcher
and a pair of thongs (for your feet.)

And this is just all I can think of without taking a look. I can't remember what my first consciously collected crab was, but it probably had something to do with a visit to Joe's Crab Shack - I don't eat seafood at all, but I'm a sucker for cute trinkets. Strangely, I don't care much for hermit crabs. The only kind of crab I'll likely never have are live ones; I'd be devastated when they die.
